Chapter 6

Something woke Sparky.

She opened her eyes to complete darkness, straining her senses, trying to figure out what had pulled her from her sleep.

Was that…the faint sound of crying?

She closed her eyes again, all her energy focused on her hearing, but she didn’t hear it again. Had she imagined it the first time? Or had the sound of a little girl crying woke her up, but faded before she could be certain?

Well, her recording equipment would be able to tell her for sure.

She rolled over—the guest bed was a queen, so much bigger than the twin she’d slept in her entire life—and fumbled for her phone on the nightstand. Four-thirty a.m.? Well, that wasn’t too early to wake up.

And maybe it was exactly what was necessary to catch a ghost…if there was one.

Smiling in excitement, she eventually flopped her way over to the edge of the bed and swung her legs off. She reached for the switch on the lamp and was surprised to find it dead.

Hmm.

By the light of her phone, she fumbled her way to the overhead light’s switch. Also dead. Frowning now, she checked her equipment.

All dead.

She sighed. Must’ve been the circuit breaker again.

Luckily, her laptop was plugged into a surge protector—because she was anal like that when it came to her babies—and should start up fine. Before she could feel her way over to it though, she heard something else.

A moaning, which started over her head as a low pitch but climbed until it seemed to permeate the walls, drew her gaze to the ceiling.

Sparky held her breath, realizing she was finally hearing the sound which had caused Jax so many sleepless nights. This was it! This was why he’d hired her! She’d get to the bottom of it for sure.

After a few minutes, she realized the sound had faded. It was still there, very faint, but she could only hear it because she was expecting to hear it. Or maybe it was just the echo of the sound in her mind.

Excited, she flicked her phone’s flashlight back on. The house was chilly, so she slid her fluffy robe over her jammies, scooped up her laptop and her phone, and slipped out of the room.

On the way downstairs, she checked a few of the light switches. It seemed as though the circuit from her half of the upstairs had been tripped, but the rest of the house was fine.

Interesting.

It was likely the fact she had so many pieces of recording equipment plugged in. She was looking forward to Jax waking up, so she could check the stuff in his room and see if there’d been any audio record of the crying she thought she’d heard.

In the meantime, she’d do what she could.

But when she reached the main floor—still and silent and dark—her bravery faltered.

Her bare toes curled on century-old oak floorboards, and she glanced around the foyer. The furnishings were new, and the features had been renovated to make this a comfortable home, but this building had seen a lot of history.
